Prettier Than Pink (http://www.prettierthanpink.com) is an all-girl Los Angeles-based alternative pop/rock band whose eclectic, colorful sounds reflect the varied tastes of today’s youth. Drawing upon the quirkiness of British pop, past and present, and the breezy vocal harmonies of Asian music. However, the songs are completely in English, and they completely distance themselves from the hopeless depression and blind anger that characterized much of modern rock in the ‘90s.

Like Franz Ferdinand and the Killers, Prettier Than Pink is a group that wants people to dance and have fun. But the difference is in the perspective. Neither Franz Ferdinand nor the Killers speak from a female point-of-view. Boys have their own take on crushes and heartaches, and Prettier Than Pink speaks for the common girl. For example, in the hyper kinetic “Kryptonite,” a young lady attends a rock concert, only to be mesmerized by one of the members. “Everything turned to black and white/Felt like I was weakened by Kryptonite,” she confesses, and is bummed when the man ignores her for his unattractive girlfriend. This is an experience that many women have gone through in their lives. Nevertheless, in true PTP fashion, the story is told in a charmingly funny manner.

Just as the Go-Go’s and the Bangles before them, Prettier Than Pink have a strong sense of sisterhood. They rock hard without losing their sense of femininity, and their lyrics convey their most imaginative and silliest thoughts. On their U.S. debut Chop Suey (http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/prettierthanpink), Prettier Than Pink prove that they can be as creatively wild (“Mars,” an interstellar ode to the red planet); mysterious (“Johnny Blaze,” a love song for Marvel Comics’ bike-riding flaming skull); sarcastic (“Little Men, Big Cars,” a putdown on egocentric jerks who try to impress with their pimping wheels); and cinematic (“Irish Rose,” a pulse-pounding tribute to U2’s Bono) as the boys. It’s Girl Power without the angst.

Prettier Than Pink believes in delivering positive messages; they want kids to “Get Up” instead of sit down. They are a band that encourages people to express their individuality, to not be afraid or be ashamed of being different - because we are all different.

Humanity itself is one big chop suey. We are a collection of various spices, Prettier Than Pink are trying to say.

Have fun, breathe in the fresh air, and celebrate the possibilities of living in a world of endless colors.
