Winner of two first-place Washington Press Association Awards (in 1989 and 1999) and one first-place award from the Society of Professional Journalists (in 2002), Michael Sutton is a long-time veteran of the music industry. Beginning his career in Manila, Philippines at the age of 19, Sutton contributed reviews to the popular Filipino magazine Movie FLASH in the late ‘80s.
The protégé of legendary Philippine rock critic Goldwyn Morales Azul, Sutton quickly established himself within the U.S. journalism field upon returning to America. In 1989, Sutton was hired by the renowned comic-book publication Amazing Heroes and the Seattle grunge icon Backlash. By 1990, Sutton was already writing for the U.K., producing reviews and feature articles for the glossy science-fiction magazine Fantazia in Great Britain.
Shortly thereafter, Sutton co-founded the alternative-rock and Seattle grunge publications The Underground and Pandemonium!, the latter featured in the critically acclaimed documentary Hype!
In 2001, Sutton joined the staff of the prestigious All-Music Guide. Sutton’s articles for the All-Music Guide were sold to MTV, VH-1, Rolling Stone, CDNow, among a number of other top media outlets. His work would eventually appear in one of the All-Music Guide’s books.
Seeking new challenges, Sutton accepted an offer from independent hip-hop record label Know-It-All Records to be their A&R Representative and publicist/radio promoter. Sutton made headlines when he became the first A&R rep for a U.S. label to sign a Philippine-based rock band, the Pin-Up Girls. Sutton took the Pin-Up Girls and another Filipino group, Girl In Park, to No. 1 in New Jersey. He even acquired coverage for them in England, Israel, and Sweden.
In late 2004, Sutton decided to venture on his own. As an independent radio promoter and publicist, Sutton has added more than 250 radio and print contacts to his already vast list of connections. His clients, ranging from rock to jazz to hip-hop, have gotten spun on radio stations throughout the U.S. and overseas. Sutton offers different price packages for his campaigns; for further information, e-mail him at
